Andhracafe.com- A vaccine that will prevent cervical cancer and genital warts is under developmental stage and is expected to be available in less than a year.
Ian Frazer of Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research, the University of Queensland Australia is developing the vaccine.
Frazer, who was in the city to attend the three-day "Third Indo-Australian conference on Biotechnology vaccines for cancer and infectious diseases, lifestyle and degenerative diseases, revealed that cervical cancer can be prevented through interventions like pap smear, HPV testing and preventive vaccines.
The vaccines have proven safe and several of these vaccines developed have demonstrated safety and immunogencity in Phase 1 clinical trials. The vaccine is preventive and not therapeutic and Phase 3 trials are underway.
Globally 2.50 lakh cervical cancer deaths are reported every year and 99.8 per cent cervical cancer is caused by Human Papiloma Virus (HPV).
